Dark or light? Choose a readable Shopify storefront

A colour scheme should support your products and help shoppers read, compare, and buy. Choose dark or light surfaces around your catalogue and accessibility needs, not a trend.

Let your products lead

Compare your product photography on both light and dark surfaces. Check whether packaging edges, transparent images, and colour options remain clear. Use consistent image backgrounds where practical, and review an entire collection rather than choosing a theme from one striking hero image.

Check contrast in every state

Test body copy, prices, form labels, links, and button text against their actual backgrounds. Include hover, focus, selected, disabled, and error states. Avoid relying on colour alone to indicate a sale, a required field, or a selected variant. Text and controls need to remain understandable without subtle colour differences.

Protect the shopping hierarchy

Keep the primary shopping action easy to recognise and secondary actions visually distinct. A dark theme can still feel crowded, while a light theme can still be difficult to read. Clear headings, sensible line lengths, and enough spacing matter in either direction.

Test before you commit

Review the storefront on phones and laptops in different lighting conditions. Ask people to find a price, choose an option, and locate delivery information. Support reduced-motion preferences where relevant and avoid effects that distract from products. The better colour scheme is the one that suits your brand while keeping everyday shopping tasks clear.
